It is fast becoming a popular place for marriage proposals and weddings.

Matawhero

Established in 1968 by Bill Irwin, Matawhero had their first vintage in 1975. Following on in his fathers pioneering footsteps son Denis imparted his own colourful syle and won fame for his Gewurztrminer, everyone was drinking it including the Queen and our own primeminister and politicians of the time.

Sadly over time Matawhero almost became non existant until the Searle family revived the Matawhero lable. At present they have 6 whites and 2 reds in the Matawhero range. The Searles have contracted Kim Crawford to over see their winemaking. Kim's skills are well noted in the many awards and acolades he has received from wines produced in the Gisborne area often from challenging Gisborne conditions.

Waimea Estates

In the early nineties orchardists Trevor and Robyn Bolitho were keen to diversify from apples into grape growing and winemaking. They recognised that the stony alluvial soils of the Waimea Plains were ideal for fine wine production. There are now over 140 hectares planted in six vineyards that are family owned and run.

Nelson boasts high sunshine hours which provide  ripe fruit flavours, while cool evenings give a fresh natural acidity to the wines. These factors combined with the high quality viticultural management and skilled winemaking help produce an excellent array of quality wines.

Waimea Estates has a three tier range with the focous on Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Riesling and Chardonnay. The flagship Waimea Range retails at very reasonable prices and is made every year. The Bolitho Signature Vineyard Range are ultra premium wines that are only made when vintage conditions allow. The Spinyback Range is a vibrant fruit-driven,easy drinking style that sells in wine stores at mid range pricing.

Lake Chalice Wines

In 1989 two wind surfing mates Chris Gambitsis and Phil Binnie decided that enjoying wine was not enough and what they really wanted to do was grow grapes and make wine. In true kiwi fashion, they jumped in at the deep end and set about establishing the notoriously stony Falcon Vineyard. They named their fledgling operation Lake Chalice Wines after the wilderness lake in the Richmond range bordering the north of the Wairau Plain, and adopted the stunning New Zealand Falcon as their emblem.

Lake Chalice Wines is a key sponsor of the Wingspan Trust preserving NZ's birds of prey, and is active in the Falcons for Grapes project in the Marlborough attempting to reintroduce Falcons to the Wairau Valley.

Grapes are grown on their own four vineyards and complemented with fruit from several long established growers.

Brookfields Vineyards Meeanee, Napier, Hawkes Bay

Founded in 1937, Brookfields Vineyards is Hawke's Bay's oldest boutique winery, situated alongside the glistening waters of the Tutaekuri River, between Napier and Hastings.

The winery was purchased by the current owner, Peter Robertson, in 1977. He has since transformed Brookfields into a leading winery for New Zealand premium wines.

Brookfields is built on tradition and sustainability, combining the best techniques from the past and today, to produce exciting wines each year from their own or shared ownership Hawke's Bay vineyards.

Brookfields produces between 8,000 and 10,000 cases of wine each year. In a great vintage that won't change a great deal.  There is no desire to push up volumes and chase expansion when there's the challenge of creating an even more dramatic wine.

Brookfields produce a number of wine varieties and have won a number of wine awards.
